Chaired by Diego Rodriguez of Argentina, the five scientists discussed cooperative research on the biodiversity of predators at the apex of the trophic web. Seabirds, penguins, seals and whales were the main groups considered, with squid and large fishes also covered. Initiatives to share data were discussed, with a view to exploring how different species are responding to climate change.

OLA CAML - the South American Consortium, August 2006

The South American nations have formed a Consortium called Oficina Latinoamericana para el Census of Antarctic Marine Life (OLA-CAML) to coordinate the Antarctic biodiversity research of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay. The first meeting in August in Concepcion, Chile was in conjunction with the “II Simposio Latinoamericano sobre Investigaciones Antárticas”. Scientists, administrators and logisitics people discussed the structure for OLA-CAML and agreed to provide information for a matrix on biodiversity projects during the IPY.

Southern Ocean Observation System (SOOS) Workshop

Oceanographers, biologists and engineers met to examine the feasibility of establishing an observation system for the Southern Ocean. They discussed incorporating data collected by biologgers on marine mammals and seabirds. The positive response from the scientific community will be followed up in discussion with experts in relevant fields. The Workshop was hosted jointly by CAML and POGO (Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans) during the conference of SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research).

OGS Explora

The OGS Explora berthed in Hobart on 9 March. The vessel was on the way back to home port Trieste, Italy after nearly three months in Antarctica on a swath-mapping expedition. CAML is using this high-resolution bottom topography to design sampling positions for voyages during IPY. Scientists Laura de Santis, Valentino Volpi and Andrea Cova showed their results to CAML participants Phil O’Brien, Victoria Wadley and Steve Rintoul. The Explora team found a mud volcano in 3,500 m off Wilkes Land.

CAML Workshop at SCAR meeting - 11 July Hobart Australia
